It’s common to hear many doubts about what is haying. For that reason this material has it objective to clarify what is this activity and what it represents in agricultural production. This way let’s analyze the process from the beginning.
Hay
Hay is a mixture of plants cut and dried mainly grass and legumes, used as forage for cattle. This mixture promotes dehydration of plants but without nutritive proprieties loss. In Brazil, its common to use the sun energy and wind for dehydration, in some cases drier machines. This way the hay’s storage time is guarantee and increased but keeping it nutritional proprieties.
For small quantities of production, haying could be manually done by tools like cutlass, fork , manual baler or still it’s possible to simple storage it in bulk. But for large production exists equipments that mechanize and sustain this production process.
Hay utilization
In driest seasons like winter, pasture cannot provide an abundant and quality feeding for animals, for that reason agricultural producers use hay as additional resource to keep productivity of cattle for dairy or beef cattle.
Just for reference, in normal conditions 5 kg (11 lbs) of hay / day are sufficient to supplement the feeding of an adult cow. This way, a farmer that is capable to haying all exceeded grass produced on his own propriety beyond guarantee cattle feeding, can also sell the rest of production to other farmers, since his posses a good quality product.
